Five Brookdale Student-Athletes Earn NJCAA Academic Honors

Colorado Springs, CO- Five Brookdale Community College student-athletes have earned academic honors, as announced by the NJCAA this afternoon. A three-tiered honor system, to earn the NJCAA Award for Superior Academic Achievement, a student athlete must have earned a GPA between 3.80 – 3.99 and the NJCAA Award for Exemplary Academic Achievement requires a GPA between 3.6 and 3.79 and the NJCAA Pinnacle award requires a 4.0. For all honors, at least 45 credit hours must have been completed.

Colorado Springs, CO-Five Brookdale Community College student-athletes have earned academic honors, as announced by the NJCAA this afternoon. A three-tiered honor system, to earn the NJCAA Award for Superior Academic Achievement, a student athlete must have earned a GPA between 3.80 – 3.99 and the NJCAA Award for Exemplary Academic Achievement requires a GPA between 3.6 and 3.79 and the NJCAA Pinnacle award requires a 4.0.  For all honors, at least 45 credit hours must have been completed.

Sophomore women's soccer player Chelsea James (Howell, NJ) demonstrated exemplary skills in the classroom and on the field.  A midfielder on the National Championship squad, James was the 2013 lead scorer with 23 goals, 20 assists, and 66 individual points.  James was selected for the NJCAA All-Tournament team, first-team All-Region and All-GSAC, and was the Region XIX Player of the Year.  In addition to her impressive display on the field, James was selected to the NSCAA Junior College Scholar All-American Team.  With a 3.85 GPA, James etches a spot on the NJCAA Award for Superior Academic Achievement list.

Joining James is softball player Bobbie Boehler (Hazlet, NJ), who completed her Brookdale career with a 3.94 GPA.   Boehler earned several recognitions for her athleticism and academic ability.  The two-year starting short stop was named Region XIX's top fielder; and was named to the NJCAA All-Tournament team in 2013.  This spring Boehler was one of two Brookdale athletes earning the NATYCAA Scholar-Athlete of the year award.  As an early childhood development major, Boehler is a two-time Academic All-Region honoree.
 
The fellow recipient of the NATYCAA Scholar-Athlete award, Maclane Smoke (Belmar, NJ), a criminal justice major, is one of the most decorated men's tennis players to ever come through Brookdale.  Earning a 3.81 GPA for the year and the NJCAA Award for Superior Academic Achievement, Smoke is the first player in program history to win back-to-back National championships.  , and was elected First Team All-Region, and First Team All-GSAC.

Rounding out the recipients for the NJCAA Award for Superior Academic Achievement is women's soccer freshman Amanda Anastasia (Middletown, NJ).  Earning a 3.84 GPA this year, Anastasia was elected to the 2013 NJCAA All-Tournament Team.   As a member of the 2013 national championship team, Anastasia finished the season with a 1.000 shot-on-goal percentage.

Women's tennis sophomore Brandi Calvano (St. Petersburg, FL), completed her 2013 season with a 3.79 GPA, earning the award for NJCAA Exemplary Academic Achievement.  Calvano was also named a member of the Dean's List and is a business administration/accounting major.
