Sewell, NJ - Despite the weather not cooperating, Brookdale softball managed to squeeze in two games for the NJCAA North Atlantic District Region 19 double-elimination championships. The #3 seeded Jersey Blues defeated the #2 Middlesex College Blue Colts, 7-3, to move on to an unfortunate 4-2 loss against the #1 RCSJ-Gloucester Roadrunners.
In game-one against the Blue Colts, sophomore pitcher, Mallory Shevlin, stepped up huge in the circle and at the plate. Shevlin (15-8) launched for 7.0 innings with four strikeouts, then hit 2-for-3 in the batters box for five monstrous RBI's. Freshman center fielder, Jillian Fay, was crucial, batting 2-for-4 for an RBI with three stolen bases, and sophomore second baseman, Abby Kisseberth, matched Fay with her 2-for-4 at bats and a key RBI.
The Jersey Blues knew they had to dig deep for their second game against the #1 Roadrunners. Brookdale capitalized on some Roadrunner errors in the 2nd and 5th innings to take a 2-1 lead until the Roadrunners got into a hitting groove in the bottom of the fifth to pull ahead, 4-2. Mallory Shevlin and freshman right fielder, Abbey Ford, each had an RBI hit, while Jillian Fay tried to get things going with her 2-for-4 at bats and an additional three stolen bases.
Brookdale will try to stay alive in the tournament and play the winner of the #4 Northampton Community College/#2 Middlesex College game on Monday, May 13th, for a 2:00pm start at RCSJ-Gloucester.
