Toms River, NJ - The Jersey Blues men's tennis team fought a tough battle, especially with the doubles matches, but ultimately prevailed against the Ocean County College Vikings in a heated 4-3 match finish.
The Blues came out strong, winning four of the five singles matches. Freshman Bryan Cajas was in the line up for the first time this year at 1st singles, and fought a hard victory over Viking, Josh Kline. Cajas dropped the first set, 6-3, was down in the second set, and then bounced back to a tie breaker. Cajas was down 5-2, and won 8-6. Cajas then steamrolled Kline in the 3rd set, 6-0, earning a victory in his first match of the season.
At 3rd singles, freshman, Shea Hoff, came out strong beating Ocean's, Dylan Torres, in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6). The victory was Hoff's first victory of the season after being asked to fill in at both 1st and 2nd singles when Brookdale was short-handed earlier in the season.
The match came down to a 4th singles combat between freshman, Isaias Usurin, and Viking, Jared Erickson. Usurin jumped out to win the first set, only to lose the second. Usurin was then down in the third set, 4-3, but he scratched back, leaving Jared at four games and winning 6-4, giving Brookdale their first team win of the season.
Freshman, Louis Cajas, had a hard fought, showing real heart and grit after dropping the first set, 6-0. Cajas was down in the 2nd set, 5-2, also battled back to a second set tie breaker, won, 7-5, then lost in the 3rd set.
Brookdale (1-3) will host the RCSJ - Gloucester Roadrunners next, on Saturday, April 16th, at noon.
