LINCROFT – Angie Hauser and Carly Gleason each tossed one-hit shutout ball leading No.1 ranked Brookdale (37-2, 14-0) to a doubleheader sweep and a pair of mercy-rule wins over Atlantic Cape Monday, on the Blues home field.
Hauser (Brick Twp. HS) picked up her sixth win of the season without a loss in the 9-0 first game victory, throwing a five inning, one-hit shutout. She struck out eight and walked one in going the distance.
Hauser was vying for her second no hitter of the season with two outs in the top of the fifth, when a seeing-eye ground ball found its way out of the infield for Atlantic Cape's only hit of the game. Centerfielder Cassidy Brzozowski (Howell Twp. HS) had made a great running catch two batters earlier to keep the no hitter alive.
Brookdale rode a six-run first inning to victory as Courtney Paone doubled to lead off the inning and drilled a two- run single later in the inning to spark the Blues. Freshman Bobbie Boehler (Raritan HS) had a two-run single, first baseman Molly Carroll (Keyport HS) laced a RBI double and sophomore Brianna Davidson (Monroe HS) singled to center for an RBI as the Blues jumped out to the big lead.
The Blues tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth as sophomore Kathleen Sharp (Toms River East) smacked a two run double and scored on Carroll's long sacrifice fly. Hauser doubled to lead off the inning and Keara Homan (Manasquan HS) walked before scoring on Sharps double.
Carly Gleason (Brick Memorial) recorded her 100 strikeout of the season, extending the total to 105 with a seven-strikeout performance, as Brookdale blew-out the hapless Buccaneers 15-0 in the second game. Gleason (14-1) allowed one hit and walked two in the shutout win. The shutout lowered her ERA to a miniscule 1.43 for the season.
Brookdale scored seven runs in the second and eight in the third while banging out 19 hits, including six doubles and a home run, as they remained undefeated in conference play.
Paone led the charge going 4-4 with a double and three RBI. Brzozowski was 2-2, blasting her fourth home run of the season and driving in three runs, while Homan went 2-3 with a double and two RBI.
Freshman Stephanie Granger (Howell Twp. HS) added a RBI double and sophomore third baseman Allie Muratore (Middletown South) went 2-3 with a double and a RBI. Carroll was 2-4 with two runs scored and a RBI, while Sharp chipped in with two hits, a double and two runs scored.
The Blues are on the road Tuesday and Wednesday before returning home for a Thursday (4-18-13) doubleheader vs. Ocean Community College. First pitch is 3:30 P.M.
